What is solar power?

Solar power is energy generated by the sun. This power is obtained by harnessing the sun’s rays through solar panels which are then transferred into useable energy. Solar power is an effective renewable source of energy providing an environmentally sustainable and infinite approach to energy production.

How do solar panels work?

A solar panel consists of photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into electricity. The particles of light (also known as photon atoms) that hit the solar panel produce a direct current. This current flows into an inverter which converts the DC current to an active current which can be used to power homes and businesses. The photovoltaic cells need to create an electric field to function, meaning the manufacturer must give the materials a 50/50 positive and negative charge to conduct electricity.

Solar panels harness the sun’s energy to produce free electricity while any excess energy can be sold back to the power grid. In the case that you need additional power, you can draw this from the grid network.

Solar power energy

Solar power energy reduces the need for the generation of fossil fuel and cuts greenhouse emissions. If you’d like to be a part of the solution, find out how solar panels work and how to create an energy efficient home.

Sydney’s Climate

Sydney Climate

Sydney has an average of 20 sunny days a month with 7 hours a day of sunshine! This makes it a perfect place to rein in solar energy.

In 2017, more than 3.5 million households installed a solar system in Australia, with NSW installing 44,217 systems in 2018. Research shows that more than 230,000 Sydney homes are expected to install rooftop solar panels in an effort to make sustainable lifestyle changes this year. Currently, Menangle near Campbelltown holds the record for the highest percentage of installed solar power systems in Sydney at 60%.

Clean Energy Council spokesperson, Mark Bretherton, told Domain “Solar is also proving popular in new estates, where it’s a selling point for some developers who are pitching their homes to young families”.

What are the Benefits?

Benefits of solar panels

Renewable & Environmentally Friendly

Renewable energy is inexhaustible, and just like the sun, it will never run out, no matter how much we use.

Our known oil deposits are predicted to run out by 2052, gas by 2060 and coal by 2088. These fossil fuels can take over a million years to form, so once they run out, they cannot be easily replenished. We’re currently using these finite resources faster than we can keep up with, severely contributing to the rise of global warming. Renewable energy is far more self-sufficient and sustainable for our future on this earth. Generating electricity with a solar power system can dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower your carbon footprint.

Total electricity generation in Australia was estimated to be 259,446 GW hours (GWh) in the calendar year 2017. Non-renewable sources contributed to 220,359 GWh (85 per cent) of total electricity generation in 2017. While Renewable energy from sources like wind, solar and hydro provide about 15% of Australia’s electricity supply.

Renewable energy sources such as wind, geothermal, hydropower and solar are cleaner, safer and greener for the environment and kinder to your wallet. An average household saves over $2,160 yearly after the installation of a residential solar system with the continuous energy you generate being free. The systems are low maintenance and you’re able to gain financial government incentives through the Small-scale Technology Certificates program.

Reduced Electricity Bill

Installing solar panels on the rooftop of your Sydney home can help you save on your monthly electricity bill. The amount of energy you use and the size of the PV system will determine how much you save monthly. You can also benefit from the feed-in-tariff rate which determines the rate you’re paid for selling unused energy back to the grid. To identify this rate, a bi-directional meter needs to be installed by a qualified electrician.

With an installed solar energy system, your household is protected from the carbon tax and the unpredictable rise of electricity prices. An average household saves over $2,000 yearly after installation of a residential solar system.

Provides Jobs for the Community

Provides Jobs for the Community

The Australian Institute discovered that 53% renewable energy capacity by the year 2030 would create between 18,000 and 59,000 direct jobs across Australia for construction, operation, manufacturing, installation and maintenance of electricity generation.

There are 14,820 full-time jobs in renewable energy production as reported in April 2018. The Australian Bureau of Statistics says this boost was driven mainly by Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Rooftop solar is responsible for almost half of those 14,820 jobs.

Government Incentives

Solar systems can be subsidised by the government in a solar financial incentive. The incentive subsidises the upfront cost of installation in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates. The special type of RECs that you get for a residential solar system are called ‘Small Scale Technology Certificates’.

The SRES was developed to financially assist households and small businesses to install renewable energy solar systems. The Federal Government’s planned Small-Scale Technology Certificates incentives are set to further reduce by 1/13 (around 7.6%) in January 2019 and every year until 2031.

The criteria for the solar financial incentive are:

  1. The system is less than 100 KW in size.
  2. The system is installed and designed by a Clean Energy Council accredited professional.
  3. The solar panels and inverters are approved for use in Australia by the Clean Energy Council.

Steps:

  1. Apply for eligibility
  2. Install your PV solar system
  3. Apply for a rebate

Types of Solar Panels:

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline solar panels

Monocrystalline solar panels are considered the best choice of solar PV technology. They are known to have the highest efficiency, converting 15-20% of sunlight into electricity. The panel is made up of a matrix of monocrystalline silicon rounded edge cells with silver lines that collect the electricity and diamonds at the corner of each cell.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Polycrystalline leverage silicon crystal that is composed of small grains with no rules between them within a solar cell. The appear rectangular in shape with no round edges. Polycrystalline panels are often only slightly less efficient without the wasted space of rounded corners and diamonds found in monocrystalline panels but can be a cheaper option.

Thin Film Solar Panels

Thin Film Solar Panels

Thin film solar panels are made by spraying a layer of silicon onto a surface rather than the more pure method of creating slicing cells from silicon crystals. For this reason, film panels can be cheap to produce, however, they are often the less efficient option compared with Monocrystalline or Polycrystalline.
